Spicey and hot - qualification nears climax at Worlds 2026

Day four delivered some of the most dramatic racing of the championship so far as riders battled survival conditions in Viana do Castelo, Portugal with gusts reaching 27 knots, powerful currents and a heavy Atlantic swell testing every rider of the fleet. American rider Daniela Moroz summed it up perfectly; “It was spicy all day. Like a jalapeño early on then a Ghost pepper later.”

As the regatta heads into its decisive phase, attention now turns to the men’s Gold Fleet, where just 25 riders remain in contention for a coveted place in the top ten and qualification for the medal series.

The women’s fleet completed a further four races in equally punishing conditions, with the leading trio once again asserting control despite rare mistakes from the two title favourites.

Defending world champion Jessie Kampman retained her overall lead, although for the first time this week she looked vulnerable. Two seventh-place finishes marked the first occasion the Dutch rider has finished outside the top three.

Closest challenger Laurianne Nolot also showed signs of weakness, the double world champion ending one race outside the top ten. Despite the setbacks, only a single point separates the pair heading into the final stages of qualification.

Behind them, the battle within the Chinese squad intensified. Liu Chenxue produced one of the standout performances of the day, claiming a race victory alongside two second-place finishes to leapfrog team-mate Wang Si in the standings.

Australia’s Breiana Whitehead continued her remarkably consistent regatta to sit sixth overall and firmly in contention for the medal series.

The fight for the crucial tenth qualification place also took a dramatic turn. Swiss rider Elena Lengwiler and Argentinian Youth World Champion Catalina Turienzo both endured difficult days, tumbling to tenth and eleventh respectively, separated by only three points.

In the men’s fleet, Max Maeder continued his near flawless run despite the punishing conditions. “It was like a washing machine,” said the Singapore star after racing.

Swiss rider Gian Stragiotti remains second overall but suffered a costly setback after being penalised for an early start in the penultimate race. The mistake allowed reigning world champion Riccardo Pianosi to close the gap to just one point.

Further down the leaderboard, the battle for medal series qualification is set for a tense finale on day five. Only seven points separate Croatia’s Martin Dolenc in ninth from China’s Huang Qibin in eleventh.

Holding onto the vital tenth spot is Greece’s Cameron Maramenidis, who responded impressively after a difficult week that included two disqualifications handed down in the jury room. The Greek rider showed resilience in the demanding conditions with a string of consistent finishes to keep his medal series hopes alive.

With qualification for the medal series concluding on day five, the pressure is only set to rise as every point becomes critical in the fight for championship glory.
